Social Commentary and Portrait Writeup

For the subject of both my portrait and my social commentary I chose to take photos of my #1Acquaintance Katie Grenier. She is a current third year at Carroll College in Helena, MT (2018). She and I have been very close since November of 2014, and have become each other's confidants. When I first met Katie she was a very reserved, shy, person who did not do well in social situations. After a year of us knowing each other we began an unspoken acknowledgement that she was a lesbian. She did not officially tell me until July of 2016. I was there first person she "came out" to. That moment was a major turning point for our friendship, because it showed a level of trust between us that she felt comfortable enough to tell me something about herself that she had never felt secure enough to even acknowledge the truth herself. Over the next six months I stood by her as emotional support as she told the rest of her family and friends.  In the fall of 2017 Katie took another step in becoming her true self, she entered into the world of Drag.

For this project I wanted to bring to light not only the blatant disrespect for the LGBTQ+ community in the United States, but also the hidden world of being a Drag King. In the current political climate the acceptance towards the LGBTQ+ community seems to be regressing. The far right has begun to take over the country and revert us back to a time of hate and unacceptance. For the official portrait I chose a picture of Katie holding her pride flag, with the US flag flying in the background. The flag in the background of the image was taken from a different photo of Katie, but the overall appearance of that photo was not as impactful. I loved this photo because it exudes a sense of pride and determination for the LGBTQ+ community. When I look at this photo I see the community taking a stand against the bigotry and persecution they face in the country today. For the social commentary I chose to do a side-by-side of her in and out of Drag. When most people think of Drag they think of queens, and fabulous hair, heels, and especially the marvelous RuPaul.  What many people do think of are the Drag Kings. Kings are women who take on a masculine appearance and persona. For Katie, Drag has been a boost to her self confidence and allows her to become a whole new person for a temporary period of time. For her Benjamin M 'Kuntzin is a way to escape her everyday life and become someone new. He empowers her, and gives her confidence. I chose to do a side-by-side to show her confidence as both herself and as Benjamin.
